9.5 x 6 inches (24 x 15½ cm). 1890s

This original antique print is from The Botanical Magazine (1787-1983) by William Curtis, one of the first, and certainly the longest published, of the British horticultural journals. Regardless of year, the plants were drawn, engraved and colored by some of the leading botanical artists of the day such as Sydenham Edwards, James Sowerby and the Fitch family. These botanical journals were in great demand in Victorian times, when the middle and upper classes had an insatiable appetite for learning about and growing exotic plants. They are from editions from the 1790s, the 1850s and the 1890s. The prints from the 1850s and 1890s are hand colored lithographs on stiff paper. The prints from the 1790s are hand colored engravings. The printed image is on one side, and the reverse side of the paper is blank. They are in very good condition and the hand painted coloring is fresh and bright.
