| Information |
The butterflies on this CD are scanned from antique prints by Morris from 1895, and vintage prints by Kirby from 1907. The Reverend Frances Orpen Morris was well known for his passion for natural history and he devoted much of his leisure time to a series of works on the birds, butterflies and moths of Britain. Each print from his work on butterflies features one species of butterfly. This makes them quite different to many other antique prints of butterflies, which often have a mixture of species on them. These prints look great when framed in groups. Kirby's work on butterflies is well known to this day and is in a different style to Morris'. His prints were designed to provide entomologists and tourists with a comprehensive guide to European butterflies and moths. The intricacy of the markings on each butterfly, moth and caterpillar is remarkable. The butterflies and moths are shown on the plants they typically inhabit. |
