Information

This CD contains 30 superb and highly detailed scans of original antique prints from the first and only edition of a work "Album des Aves Amazonica" by Professor Emilio Goeldi.
The Amazon region has some of the richest bird life in the world, and had been made famous through the research and journals of famous naturalists such as Spix. However, Goeldi's work was the first comprehensive account of the birds of this remarkable region.
Goeldi's album presented numerous Amazonian bird species against the backdrop of tropical scenery. The superb color plates are after watercolors paintings by the artist E. Lohse, and were enhanced through the technique of chromolithography

Date

The prints the scans were made from were original antique prints made in the period 1902 to 1906

Source

Album Des Aves Amazonica by Goeldi.

Print method

The prints were chromolithographs with a spectacular range of colors, and they scanned very well.

Chromolithography was invented in about 1830 and was the first true multi-color printing technique, previously color had to be applied by hand. A printing stone was used for each color so highly colorful prints such as these required a lot of stones and a great deal of care in aligning them. The Victorians loved this method of printing because of the rich coloring that could be achieved.

Condition

The prints were in excellent condition

Size

The prints measured 11¾ by 9 ¾ inches (29.5 cm by 23.5 cm)
