| Information |
The scans were made from original antique prints from the first edition of Dictionnaire D'Histoire Naturelle by Charles Orbigny which was published in 1849. Many experts consider prints from this work to be the finest natural history prints ever produced (see * below). The drawings the prints were engraved from were by the leading French natural history artists of the time, such as Travies, Blanchard, Oudart, Pretre and Maubert. They are wonderfully detailed and have original and beautiful hand colouring. *E.g. Nissen ZBI, 4617; Wood 323 "the plates in this remarkable
work render it the best illustrated encyclopedia of natural history" |
| Print method |
The prints were engravings with beautiful hand colouring. Many of
these prints were hand finished with shellac which added further sheen
and
depth to
the
colours. |
Condition |
The prints were in good condition. You should note that there was some variation in the color tone of the paper. This can be adjusted using the brightness control in your imaging software (e.g Photoshop) |
| Size |
The prints were approximately 9¾" by 6¼" (24.5
cm by 16 cm) |
