These are vintage prints of fish by Marcus-Eliezer Bloch who was born in 1723 in Ansbach, Bavaria. He studied Natural History and Medicine in Berlin and eventually gained a Doctorate in Medicine in Frankfurt where he practised as a physician until his death in 1799. It's still debated Where Bloch derived his superb knowledge of ichthyology, and it remains of great interest even today. Bloch is best known for his encyclopedic work in ichthyology. Between 1782 and 1795 he published his Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, a 12-volume, beautifully illustrated work on fishes that laid the foundations of the science of ichthyology.
