| Information |
This hand colored lithograph is from an exceedingly rare set published by The Zoological Society of London in 1848 - 1849. The beautiful lithographs in this set were drawn by famous artists such as John and Elizabeth Gould, Joseph Wolf, H.C.Richter (Wolf and Richter drew many of the illustrations of birds in Gould's work), Edward Lear and G.B. Sowerby. They were printed by Hullmandel and Watson, who are famous as being the printers of John Gould work on birds. (It is worth noting that Joseph Wolf is often regarded as the greatest of natural history artists. In fact, Peter Dance in his excellent book The Art of Natural History, states that Wolf's work 'contains some of the finest creations in zoological iconography'. Wolf was born in Germany in 1820. Peter Dance describes him as a fanatic for work, and artistic and methodical in everything he did.) The hand coloring on this print is outstanding - as good as the hand coloring seen in John Gould's birds. In addition, and perhaps of most interest, is the fact that many of these lithographs were illustrating species which had just been discovered and formally recorded as a new species by The Zoological Society of London. If you are particularly interested in this please let us know when you order the print and we will include a copy of the original accompanying text about the animal. |
