Fine Rare Prints

Information

This is an original antique print from a work by Paul Gervais, professor of comparative zoology at the University of Montepelier in France.

Gervais produced a fascinating work on mammals and engaged some of the best wild life artists (such as Werner) and printmakers of the day to make the prints illustrating his work.

Date

1855. This is an authentic antique, not a reproduction.

Print method

The prints are finely detailed steel engravings. The colored prints have lovely, original hand coloring which is of a high quality. The prints with a sepia or grey toned background are also steel engravings with backgrounds printed with lithography.

Condition

Good condition. The original hand colouring is nice and bright. The paper is a little age toned and some of the prints have a small amount of foxing in the margins (this may be easily covered with a matte when framing.
