Information

This is a fascinating antique chromolithograph of plants used in medicine from a work about medicinal plants by Benjamin Horton and Thomas Castle. Their aim was to give an accurate description of the medicinal plants found in Britain. At the time it was felt many had been forgotten, but in fact could still be of great use. Horton and Castle gave the example of the Foxglove flower, which was well understood in the 16th century, then forgotten about. Did you know fox gloves are still used in medicine nowadays? The drug digitalis is derived from foxgloves and is used to treat heart conditions.

These look great framed in groups of four in kitchens and bathrooms.

Date

1862. This is an antique, not a reproduction.

Chromolithograph on mid-weight paper, print on one side, blank on the other side. Chromolithographs were made by printing from stone blocks, with each color being printed from a different stone block. The Victorians were masters of this technique.
