Fullarton

An original 150 Year old map from the Royal Illustrated Atlas
(Not a reproduction)

Turkey, Central Mediterranean Regions

18.5 x 12.5 inches (47 x 32cm)

Features two maps. The first shows The Grecian Archipelago according to the English Admiralty Survey of 1826-49 and is drawn by Petermann and engraved by Swanston . The second shows Constantinople according to the survey of Dufour and the Admiralty. It is engraved by Swanston.

Surrounding the maps are evocative, colorful views illustrating the peoples, places and wildlife of these islands. These include what looks like the Acropolis in Athens, a Dervish, Mosque of Omar, and a lady of the Harem..

The map is in good condition. There is small piece of paper which has stuck to a small part of the bottom left scene. The image is visible under so it is likely this paper could be carefully removed..

Information

This beautiful, large map is from the last highly decorative hand colored atlas published in England, "The Royal Illustrated Atlas Of Modern Geography".

The Royal Illustrated Atlas was published by A. Fullarton,& Co. of London and Edinburgh. It was published in 27 parts from 1854-62.

All the maps in this atlas were beautifully lithographed and colored with a mixture of printed color and original hand finished coloring. Swanston, Petermann, Bartholomew, Macnab and Johnson engraved the maps.

The atlas had an introduction by Dr. N. Shaw, Secretary To The Royal Geographical Society.

The atlas also had testimonials from highly respectable people including the Principals of many famous schools including Cheltenham and Marlborough. For example, W.Dobson, the Principal of Cheltenham College, describes his appreciation for the atlas as follows: "a publication of great elegance and beauty...it combines geographical maps with physical phenomena...and very beautifully executed plans of cities.

Condition

Good condition. The paper is light creamy white. Looks better in real life as our camera struggled to capture the detail on these large maps.
The odd spot of foxing and a few handling marks in the margin of a few of the maps, shown in the above photo if present. Most of the double sized maps from this atlas have a slight split at the edge of paper on the fold line as is common with folding maps of this size and age.

Size

Single page maps are 18.5 x 12.25 inches (47 x 31cm)

Double page maps are 18.5 x 22.5 inches (47 x 56cm). These have the original centre fold
