Antique print of india and himalayas by George White featuring picture of Runjeet Singh and his cavalcade of seiks

Information

George Francis White was a Lieutenant in the 31st Regiment of the British Army, stationed in India. At the time, there was an extraordinary degree of interest amongst the British public in finding out more about the exotic reaches of the British empire. To help satisfy this interest, White created a series of illustrations and travel notes to portray the stunning scenery of India, chiefly the legendary Himalayas mountains.

White drew the scenes on location during his time in India. The engravers who then prepared these engravings included renowned artists such as J.M.W Turner. White said that his publishers spared neither pains or cost in producing the engravings, which were produced at vast expense (White quotes the cost as being the equivalent of US $4000, a huge sum in 1838).

These are especially atmospheric and detailed engravings of the scenic grandeur of the Himalayan region.
