Alhambra Palace: Mosaic in the baths
23.5 x 16 cm (9.2 x 6.5 inches).
This lithograph was made in 1904 by Albert Calvert and dedicated to Alfonso III, the King of Spain. It's an original antique print, not a reproduction. The quality of the lithographic printing is superb and in many of the prints the colors are enhanced with shimmering metallic finishing, rare in lithographs of this age. It is in excellent condition.
Calvert was the author of one of the most important studies of the Alhambra, a stunning palace fortress in Granada, Spain. The Berber king Badis ben Habus built it in the 11th century to Theme of "paradise on earth". The decorations often consist of Arabic inscriptions that are manipulated into sacred geometrical patterns. The Alhambra's decorations have inspired many designers and artists, for example Maurits Cornelis Escher. It is now one of Spain's major tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
