Africa
Barbary macaques are found in Africa and Gibraltar. As they are tailless, they are also known as Barbary apes, despite being monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). Legend says as long as they exist on Gibraltar, the territory will remain under British rule

This original antique lithograph was made in the 1860s by Edmonston and Douglas in England and is from a set of prints, The Instructive Picture Book, created to educate children of wealthy families. They are some of the most attractive antique prints of animals ever made. The animals are shown in realistic and fascinating environments. They were made using a complex color lithograph printing method and are reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints. This style and these prints are very rare.

Condition: the image area is clean with just the odd speck of foxing; the paper is a little age toned close to the edges.
