Bustard
30.5 x 25.5 cm (12 x 10 inches).
This exquisitely detailed etching is by Samuel Howitt and was made in 1823. Howitt (1765-1822) is renowned for his lively portrayals of animals and sports. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, illustrated several books and the Sportsman's Magazine. His light touch with his pen, delicate brushwork and experience of field sports ensured all he drew was animated and accurate.
This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. It is in very good condition. The paper is quite thick, clean and bright, with a trace of darkening at the very edge. There are nice, strong plate marks from the printing plate pressing on the paper. There is a small, faint damp mark in the lower right hand corner of the margin that can easily be covered by the matt when framing.
