Charles Orbigny (1802 - 1857) was a French naturalist. He made major contributions to botany and zoology.
He's best known for his work Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle. This included some of the best quality natural history prints ever made. The beautiful illustrations were by the period's leading French natural history artists. Artists involved included Travies, Blanchard, Oudart, Pretre and Maubert.
The engraved prints were hand painted with deep and rich colours.
