Charles Tomlinson (1808 - 1897) was a British scientist and a member of the Royal Society. He studied science under George Birkbeck, the founder of the London Mechanics' Institute.
He became known for original investigation. This led to his job as lecturer on experimental science at King's College School.
Teaching helped inspire him to create a cyclopaedia about machines and industry. His cyclopedia celebrated the marvels of The Great Exhibition in London in 1851. It contained wonderful engravings about the 'how' of handicraft, industry and manufacturing.
Here are some of the engravings for you to choose from. They are beautiful, genuine antiques from 1851. They would look fantastic in a study.
