42 x 34.5 cm (16 x 13.5 inches)
Benedictine Monasteries
Yorkshire

This large antique engraving was made in 1717 and is from from Monasticon Anglicanum, or The History of Ancient Abbies, Monasteries,Hospitals, Cathedrals and Collegiate Churches in England and Wales, by Sir William Dugdale. It was made by copper plate engraving, has well defined plate marks, is beautifully detailed and is on heavy weight, handmade, chain-linked paper. The engraving is on one side, the other side is blank. The paper is subtle creamy white. The white border around the print is a little larger than shown. It is in excellent condition, remarkable considering it is nearly 300 years old.
Dugdale was was an English antiquary and herald. As a scholar he was influential in the development of medieval history and his work Monasticon Anglicanum is a fascinating record of religious buildings, people and finances.
