Common Brake Fern (Pteris aquilina)
27.5 x 21 cm (10.8 x 8.3 inches).
This is an antique, hand finished chromolithograph from a work by James Britten, who was an English botanist in the Victorian era. He worked in the Department of Botany at the British Museum and was editor of the Journal of Botany for 45 years. This print was made in England in the 1880s and is an authentic antique, not a reproduction. It was printed on mid-weight paper, image on one side, blank on the other side. Chromolithographs were made by printing from stone blocks, with each color being printed from a different stone block. The Victorians were masters of this technique. It is in excellent condition. The colors are strong and impressive.
