Hunting The Marten Cat:
26.5 x 17.5cm (10.5 x 7 inches).
This hand colored aquatint engraving was made in 1850 and is by Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851), the famous English painter and engraver best known for humorous illustrations of people and sports. It is a genuine antique, not a reproduction, and is in excellent condition.
Alken was one of the finest print makers and a keen sportsman, so was able to convey the fun and excitement in sports. He was especially skilful in aquatint engraving, a time consuming and difficult technique, hence rarer than most other forms of printing. Alken's are wonderfully detailed and have original hand painted colors. They are considered by antique print collectors to be some of the best of rural sports.
