Pierre Nicolas Camille Jacquelin Du Val (1828 - 1862) was a French entomologist who specialised in beetles. Born in Pyrénées-Orientales, he went to Paris to begin medical studies and became interested in entomology, the study of insects. He created, together with the painter Jules Migneaux (1825-1898), a vast work illustrating all European genera of beetles, the Genera des coléoptères d’Europe. It is one of the most remarkable European works on beetles, due to the magnificent illustrations. Here are a selection of these original antique illustrations, which are engravings with hand painted colors.
