John Evelyn (1620 - 1706) was an English writer, gardener and diarist. He was an expert on trees. His most famous work was "Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber in His Majesty's Dominions ".
He created "Sylva" to help people identify and cultivate trees and appreciate how to use their timber. He wanted to encourage landowners to plant trees to provide timber for England's navy.
"Sylva" is one of the most influential works on forestry ever.
