John Hamilton Moore (1738-1807) was a navigation teacher and author. He was born in Edinburgh, educated in Ireland, and joined the-Royal Navy at Plymouth.
In 1770 Moore started a Nautical Academy in Brentford, Middlesex.
During the 1700s many people were exploring new lands and establishing trade routes. Chronicles about travel became popular. (A chronicle is an account of facts and events arranged in chronological order).
In 1778, Moore wrote one of the best travel chronicles of the period. He called it "A New and Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels". It described some of the period's most interesting voyages and discoveries.
E.g. by James Cook, Furneaux, Magellan, Drake, Anson, Dampier, Wallis and other great explorers.
Moore said his work was "embellished with a superb and elegant set of copper plate engravings and maps". These included ones about Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, and North America.
