John Leech (1817-1864) was originally a medical student. His teachers saw his superb anatomical drawings and advised him to become an illustrator.
Leech is best known for his contribution to Punch Magazine which published over 3000 of his drawings and 600 cartoons. He also made many witty prints to illustrate sporting stories, many with an equestrian theme.
His specialism was caricature. A caricature is a picture that humorously exaggerates striking characteristics of people.
