John Mawe

John Mawe (1764 - 1829) was a British mineralogist and conchologist. He created one of the first shell collecting guides "Conchology".

Shell collecting was a popular pastime, as it was an era of exploration. Shells from exotic lands were eagerly sought for the curiosity cabinets considered indispensable in the well-appointed home.
