This is an original hand colored engraving made in ~1797 from "Barr's Buffon" English edition of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon,'s Natural History. The hand coloring is original, and the engraving is over 200 years old. It was made by copper plate engraving, has fine details and delicate original hand coloring. The paper is creamy white. It's a very good condition with a few dots of foxing.
Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. It has been said that "Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century".
