These vintage prints of fish are by Marcus-Eliezer Bloch.
Bloch was born in 1723 in Bavaria. He studied Natural History and Medicine in Berlin. He gained a Doctorate in Medicine in Frankfurt where he practised as a physician until his death in 1799.
Bloch is best known for his encyclopedic work in ichthyology. Between 1782 and 1795 he published “Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische”. This was a 12-volume, beautifully illustrated work on fishes. It laid the foundations of the science of ichthyology.
It's still debated where Bloch got his superb knowledge of ichthyology.
