Portsmouth Harbour

This antique etching was made in 1828 by Edward William Cooke , considered one of the great marine artists of the 19th century. Born into a family of engravers, and taking advantage of his love for the sea , a teenage Edward created etchings of ships and boats demonstrating an attention to detail and an infusion of life. Today, his work is displayed in several museums including Britain's National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
This is an original antique, not a reproduction. It was made by etching on quite thick matt paper, and has nice, strong printing plate marks. The thick wove paper is watermarked J. Watman 1828 and shows off the crisp black lines. It is in good condition considering it is over 180 years old. There a few dots of foxing and small unobtrusive rub marks.
