Robert John Thornton (1768–1837) was an English physician and botanical writer.
Thornton decided to create botanical illustrations to surpass all others. He named this set the "The Temple of Flora". He used top notch artists, engravers and colourists.
The Temple of Flora was published in parts from 1799.
The illustrations are mesmerising. The plants are oversized compared to the often dramatic background scenery.
It is now considered one of the most magnifcent botanical works.
