Sonnerat’s Wild Cock

16.2 x 10.2 cm (6.5 x 4.0 inches)
Gallus sonnerati. One of the wild ancestors of the domestic chicken and is named after the French explorer Pierre Sonnerat.

This finely detailed engraving was made in London in 1843.
It is a genuine antique, not a reproduction and is in very good condition. The original hand colouring and engraving is excellent. The publishing company William Home Lizars of London and Edinburgh, made this delightful set of engravings.
This is a steel plate engraving, on medium weight paper with the image on one side and it is blank on the reverse side. The paper is a creamy tone, slightly darker at the edge.
