Arion Preserved By A Dolphin

48.5 x 32 cm (19.1 x 12.6 inches).
Arion Preserved By A Dolphin
This spectacular baroque engraving is from Bernard Picart's Le Temple Des Muses.
The engraving was made in 1733, is from the first edition and is an original antique. It has captions in French, English, German, and Dutch.
It is in very good condition for its age.
In Greek mythology, Arion won a musical competition in Sicily. On his return trip, pirates plotted to kill Arion and steal his rich prizes. They gave Arion the choice of suicide on land or being thrown in the sea. Arion sang a praise to Apollo, the god of poetry, and his song attracted dolphins. Arion threw himself into the sea rather than be killed, but one of the dolphins saved his life and carried him to safety.
