48.5 x 32 cm (19.1 x 12.6 inches).
Cassandra Foretells The Trojans Their Fate And Is Not Hearkened To.
This spectacular baroque engraving is from Bernard Picart's Le Temple Des Muses.
The engraving was made in 1733, is from the first edition and is an original antique. It has captions in French, English, German, and Dutch.
It is in very good condition for its age.
In Greek mythology Apollo cursed priestess Cassandra to say true prophecies, but never be believed. Before the fall of Troy, Cassandra foresaw that if Paris took Helen back as his wife, it would spark the destruction of Troy. Paris ignored her, went to Sparta and returned with Helen. Cassandra then warned the Trojans about the Trojan horse, but they did not believe her. It was used to smuggle enemy soldiers into Troy, leading to its fall. Bernard Picart's engraving has some terrific details. In the distance, the Trojan Horse approaches. Within the walled city of Troy, a statue of Apollo gleams. Cassandra is addressing a crowd that laughs at her.
