This spectacular baroque engraving is from Bernard Picart's Le Temple Des Muses.
The engraving was made in 1733, is from the first edition and is an original antique. It has captions in French, English, German, and Dutch.
It is in very good condition for its age.
Niobe was the daughter of Tantalus and the queen of Thebes. She was the mother of seven sons and seven daughters. Niobe boasted of her large family. Leto, mother of the gods Apollo and Artemis (Diana), was angered by and sent her children to slaughter Niobe's. In her grief, Niobe turned to stone from which her tears poured continuously.
