Penelope’s Web
This spectacular baroque engraving is from Bernard Picart's Le Temple Des Muses.
The engraving was made in 1733, is from the first edition and is an original antique. It has captions in French, English, German, and Dutch.
It is in very good condition for its age.
In Greek mythology Penelope, Queen of Ithaca, was the wife of Ulysses. In Homer's Odyssey, she became the symbol of faithfulness. While Ulysses was away for over ten years, many suitors sought her hand. To buy time, Penelope promised to choose a new husband when she had finished weaving a shroud. Every night she undid her weaving. This was 'Penelope's web' - an endless task. When Ulysses returned he killed all the suitors. In this atmospheric engraving by Bernard Picart, Penelope sits in her weaving loom at night, a ball of wool on the ground. A cupid offers a knife to help cut the weaving, thus helping true love endure.
