Hell (Tartarus)

48.5 x 32 cm (19.1 x 12.6 inches).
Hell (Tartarus)
This spectacular baroque engraving is from Bernard Picart's Le Temple Des Muses.
The engraving was made in 1733, is from the first edition and is an original antique. It has captions in French, English, German, and Dutch.
It is in very good condition for its age.
In Greek mythology, the souls of the dead received what they deserved in the afterlife. A tribunal led by Hades judged each soul. They sent souls to Tartarus or the blissful Fields of Elysium. Tartarus (Hell) was the underworld of eternal torment for souls who had committed crimes against the Gods. Bernard Picart's engraving shows Hades watching tortured souls including Tantalus and Ixion. Fires rage in the background. The ornate border contains dragons, serpents and owls.
