Thomas Rowlandson (1756–1827) was an English artist and caricaturist. His gentle sense of humour poked fun at social life.
As a schoolboy, he drew humourous sketches of teachers and pupils in the margins of his books. Rowlandson studied at the Royal Academy in London and in Paris.
He drew in outline with a pen, and delicately washed the picture with colour. He then used etching and aquatinting to make a copper printing plate. His prints were beautifully finished with hand painted colouring.
