In the 18th and 19th centuries, water birds were often owned by the upper classes. They liked to have them ornamenting their gardens and lakes. So, there are many excellent old works of art featuring water birds. Naturalists also enjoyed studying and illustrating water birds. Usually the art and illustrations were printed as engravings and lithographs.
