North America
This antique illustration is from a work by Thomas Sadler Roberts about North American birds. This is an original antique from the 1930s, not a reproduction. It is in superb condition. There is text on the back that does not relate to the birds shown.
Thomas Sadler Roberts was Professor of Ornithology and Director of the Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota from 1915. He commissioned a series of brilliant, accurate color illustrations of birds based on water color paintings by the leading bird artists of North America such as Allan Brooks, George Sutton, Walter Weber, Francis Jaques, Walter Breckenbridge and Louis Fuertes. Most of the common birds of North America were depicted. A unique feature of the illustrations is the range of plumages present - male and female, immature and seasonal. The birds are shown in beautiful natural settings, and the species shown are named under the illustration together with a note about their size compared to the illustration.
