Camellia Rubescens Major
32.5 x 24 cm (13 x 9.5 inches).
This is a superb, high quality lithograph by one of the best botanical artists of the 20th century, Paul Jones. It is from the 920th set of a limited edition of 1000 prints of these camellias. The frontispiece to the set was hand signed and numbered by Paul Jones and, if you wish, we can include a copy of the frontispiece with prints you buy. This is an original, not a reproduction. It is in excellent condition.
Paul Jones (1921-1997) was an Australian artist who specialized in painting beautiful plants and flowers in a style reminiscent of Thorntons Temple of Flora. The plates were printed with multi-color lithography in Australia and issued as a limited edition of 1000 sets in 1952. They are what is known as tipped in which means the color print has been mounted on a decorative backing mount which provides a border which makes the print easy to frame in many standard sized frames. The signature of Paul Jones is discretely placed alongside the foliage in the tradition of the great masters of botanical art. On the back of the mount paper there is a line of text relating to the next Camellia in the set.
