Lamprey Eels
21 x 15 cm (8.25 x 6 inches).
During the Middle Ages, they were eaten by upper classes in Europe, as they taste meatier than most other fish.
This is an antique stipple engraving by Pretre, a renowned French natural history artist and was made in 1819. The quality of the stipple engraving is beautifully detailed, and it has original hand coloring. It is from a rare set of natural history prints, Faune Francaise by L.Vieillot.
