Saturniidae
This is an original antique lithograph from a work by William Forsell Kirby for Cassell and Company. It was made in 1882 and is a very high quality lithograph with hand finished coloring. Butterfly and moth collecting was a passion of wealthy Victorians. Perhaps it was to do with the fact it was an era of exploration and scientific discovery and many Victorians liked to dabble in science as a hobby? These artworks are especially decorative as they show the butterflies on the wild flowers and plants they like. The butterflies swirling around flowers and plants evoke feelings of restful summer days.
It is in excellent condition. The colors are fresh and bright. The image is on one side of the paper and the paper is blank on the reverse side.
It was made by chromolithography and has hand finished coloring.
